PHOTOGRAPHY BY QUEEN ENIGMA

INTRODUCTION

This is the Introduction to Portrait Photography. This Tutorial will cover the very basic concepts of Portrait Photography.

Further Tutorials in this series will cover the following subjects:

  1. PORTRAITURE 102: Making your Subject look their best … Hair, Make-up, and clothing.
  2. PORTRAITURE 103: Lighting Systems – Natural vs Studio.
  3. PORTRAITURE 104: How to illuminate

2011 is a GREAT year for sales, huh?

Today I just sold this as a shirt:

What is going on? I can’t believe how sales have jumped this year! Sure, I can’t make a living out of it [especially as there is zero profit on THIS series], but now I have sold an average of 1 work per month for the whole of 2011.

At this rate… I’ll be buying that Hasselblad H4D60 anytime now!

and yet ANOTHER sale... this year has been very good to me!

My 12th sale for the year, and the 3rd sale for this month!

Infact, sales are 50% higher this month than for any previous month since I joined RedBubble! [what that means is that I have made a total of 3 sales this month, instead of the previous record of only 2x]

Unfortuneatly, I don’t make any profit from this range of stickers and shirts because they highlight an issue which I am happy to promote for free… so I won’t be getting that first magical $100 cheque from RedBubble this year!

MORE WOOTIENESS AND HOOTIENESS! sold ANOTHER shirt

Just logged on today to find some cool person with great taste for fashion has just bought this shirt:

That brings t-shirt sales to 20 in the last four years, and a total of 11x sales this year alone.

2011 has been the best year so far for sales for me!

Another couple of sales and I will get my first ever RedBubble Cheque!

Bring on 2012!

WOOT WOOT with some extra added HOOT!

WOOT WOOT! - I just sold another shirt!

Some marvelous person just bought my recent addition to my portfolio…

I only made this retro design shirt because I needed something to wear to a 1980’s-themed birthday party recently. I never thought someone else would want one too,

I actually got a lot of comments about this shirt at the party. People didn’t know that I had made it myself. They liked that it looked so old and worn… like it was actually from the 80’s. The actual print is not as bright as it looks onscreen [RedBubble “red” actually prints a little bit darker on a black shirt] – which just adds to the old retro look!

Hooray for Ferris!

Byron does his RedBubble Happy Dance

I am soooooo close now to getting my $100 cheque from RedBubble, soooooo close….

I am an overnight sensation!

Yep, I have rocketed to fame and glory, literally overnight

If by “overnight” you mean that 15 years ago was just yesterday!

George Swann now holds the … dubious … “honour” of being the:

FIRST PERSON EVER TO BUY ONE OF MY PHOTOGRAPHS!!!

I’m sure it is something that he will be able to tell his grandchildren in hushed tones when they ask him “Grampy, tell us the story about that photo again, pleeeeease!”

Even better still, because my work is obviously in such high demand, if I now delete this file from RB, and destroy the original file, it will become a one-off and its value will escalate a hundred-fold, maybe a thousand-fold, maybe ten-thousand-fold.

George will be able to set his whole family up for life with this one very astute purchase.

THINGS THE ART CRITICS HAD TO SAY ABOUT THIS

(not only) BLACK+WHITE MAGAZINE - Complete Collection For Sale!

Australia’s premier Coffee-Table Photography Magazine, produced by STUDIO MAGAZINE AUST.

[not only] Black & White Magazine

Black+White was a bimonthly Australian magazine published by Studio Magazines that debuted in the summer of 1992. For a period it was also known as (Not Only) Black+White magazine.

Black+White showcased art, photography and graphic design as well as interviews with celebrities and features on popular culture and current events. It featured work by Herb Ritts, Annie Leibovitz and David LaChapelle amongst many others.

The magazine gained most of its notoriety for publishing nude photographs of (mainly Australian) celebrities, most particularly those of Australian athletes set to compete in the Olympic Games. Although the images were shot in an artistic manner and are

LEARNING TO SEE IN BLACK & WHITE

LEARNING TO SEE IN BLACK & WHITE.

 …

The whole reason I got into photography was that I adore Black& White photographs.

Its as simple as that.

For the first 10 years or so [until I got my first DSLR] I ONLY shot B&W film. The only time I shot colour was when I was commissioned to do weddings… even then – I convinced all my clients to let me also shoot B&W, and even B&W Infra Red.

Strangely they all said they only wanted colour shots – UNTIL they saw the B&W ones, they were even more blown away by the Infra Red B&W photos.

What is it about B&W that has ensured its continued success as a photographic medium since the inception of photography nearly 200 years ago?

Even in the modern age of digital photography, B&W has refused to go away quietly.

Interestingly, the digital era has actually s

MUSHROOM SOUP SO GOOD IT SHOULD GET ME LAID!

Last week it was my turn to cook dinner for my Dad at my weekly visit-the-old-man,-wash-my-clothes-and-cook-dinner night.…

Yeah, after nearly four years I still don’t have a washing machine, and Dad likes it that way – he really enjoys my weekly visits and he insists that I don’t go and buy a washing machine.

Anyway, it was my turn to cook dinner [like I said] but for the life of me I couldn’t think of a damned thing to cook. In nearly four years I have only cooked the same dish twice,,, so you can understand that I was running out of ideas!

So I went to the supermarket looking for inspiration… and I found mushrooms.

Apparently mushrooms have been responsible for all sorts of inspiration for a lot of people… but I wouldn’t know about that! heh heh heh

I took the often dangerous path of “ha

JUST BROKE THE GLASS CIELING!

I just know that you have all been wondering “when is Byron going to finally enter the magic 100K Club?”…

Ok those of you who are really bored, and have no social life, might have been wondering that.

Ok ok, I concede that no-one has been thinking that.

But if you were a computer-geek [like me] with a penchant for theoretical maths and pop-culture references, then you might have been wondering when I would finally get more than 100,000 Views of my work on RedBubble.

… [the sound of crickets quietly chirping in the distance]…

Just pretend there is a Trumpet-Fanfare at the moment, I couldn’t afford to actually get any real trumpety-fanfary stuff…

1. Do you like blue cheese?

Yes, except it clashes with Red China!…

Smoked for about 15 years. Gave it up about 15months ago. Still have the occassional cig on a recreational basis. Ohhhh God they are soooo nice.

No.

What’s a Sonic? Isn’t that some sort of Hedgehog?

No, I rarely go anyway.

6. Do you like hot-dogs?

Like a fish likes water. I love hot-dogs, they are the ultimate in cheap-and-nasty fast food, but they are also amazing when you use gourmet ingredients. Really, who doesn’t like a sausage-onna-bun?

Not long to go until I break the magic 100k!

Interestingly… I am more well known for my Journals + Written Work than I am for my Photography + T-shirts.

Boy I am soooo glad I spent all those thousands and thousands of dollars on cameras and film and lenses, and filters, and stuff, when all I really needed to buy was a pen and some paper – and just write stuff…

THE WAY FORWARD - THE EIGHTH PRINCIPLE

Verse 8

May all this remain undefiled by the stains of the eight mundane concerns; And may I, recognizing all things as illusion, devoid of clinging, be released from bondage.

This last one sounds very esoteric, especially the reference to the “eight mundane concerns” so I have included them here to help with understanding this last verse. The reference to “bondage” means the “bondage” of being ruled by these eight “mundane concerns”

  1. Craving for pleasures of the six senses.
  2. Craving to be free of the unpleasant.
  3. Craving to hear sweet ego-pleasing words or sounds.
  4. Craving to not hear ugly, displeasing words or sounds.
  5. Craving to acquire material things.
  6. Craving to avoid losing or not obtaining material things.
  7. Craving for personal praise and admiration.
  8. Craving to avoid personal slander, blame and

THE WAY FORWARD - THE SEVENTH PRINCIPLE

Verse 7

In brief, may I offer benefit and joy to all my mothers, both directly and indirectly, May I quietly take upon myself all hurts and pains of my mothers.

This one sounds really wierd… but it is about taking on the pain of others for their benefit. – Remember … all this is not about YOU, it is about other people. That is the whole point… to benefit other people intead of yourself.

THE WAY FORWARD - THE SIXTH PRINCIPLE

Verse 6

When someone whom I have helped or in whom I have placed great hopes, mistreats me in extremely hurtful ways, may I regard him still as my precious teacher.

Basically it is impossible for us to practice real love, peace and compassion unless there are people who are displeasing to us. Those people are precious because they give us the opportunity to learn to be a better human being.

Verse 5

When others, out of jealousy treat me wrongly with abuse, slander, and scorn, May I take upon myself the defeat and offer to others the victory.

This is about not wanting to win [and thereby hurt the other person] … it is about recognising that no matter how someone harms us, we should never harm them back.

THE WAY FORWARD - THE FOURTH PRINCIPLE

Verse 4

When I see beings of unpleasant character oppressed by strong negativity and suffering, May I hold them dear-for they are rare to find as if I have discovered a jewel treasure!

This Verse is like an introduction to Verses 5 & 6.

This principle is about how we should relate to people who are socially marginalized, perhaps because of their behavior, their appearance, their destitution, or on account of some illness.

These people are all suffering.

We should take special care of these people, as if we have found a real treasure. Instead of feeling repulsed, we should recognise the pain and suffering of these people and treat them with compassion and understanding.

People who display negative behaviours are suffering.

This is about recognising that they are suffering and presenting u

THE WAY FORWARD - THE THIRD PRINCIPLE

Verse 3

In all my deeds may I probe into my mind, And as soon as mental and emotional afflictions arise – since they endanger myself and others – May I strongly confront them and avert them.

This is about being conscious of your thoughts and taking positive steps to avoid avoid hurting other people.

As previously mentioned… every person experiences pain and suffering. We all have thoughts and feelings which are negative, and these thoughts and feelings harm not only other people – but also ourselves.

We can make a conscious choice in the short time we have on this planet to either hurt others with our own negative thoughts and actions, or we can choose to be more than that, we can choose to recognise that we have caused pain and suffering in other people – and ourselves.

We can recognise

THE WAY FORWARD - THE SECOND PRINCIPLE

Verse 2

Whenever I interact with someone, may I view myself as the lowest amongst all, And from the very depths of my heart respectfully hold others as superior.

This is about not considering yourself to be more important than other people because that creates negative thoughts within yourself which are harmful to both yourself and others, Whereas when you hold the other person’s well-being as more important than your own, then you do not harm them [or yourself] – because your concern is for them and not you.

All human beings experience pain and suffering, to be human is to experience pain and sffering – no-one who has ever lived has escaped this condition of our existance.

To consider yourself, your thoughts, your feelings to be more important than another’s will only create pain and suf

THE WAY FORWARD - THE FIRST PRINCIPLE

Verse 1

With a determination to achieve the highest aim, For the benefit of all sentient beings which surpasses – may I hold them dear at all times.

This is the first principle upon which the following 7 principles are built. Without understanding this seemingly simple concept, the other 7 principles wont be as meaningful..

Our first consideration at all times must be to hold every human being as precious.

If you care for yourself then you must care for every person that you meet, because they are the same as you. They are all people who – just like YOU – at their very depths only want to be happy, to feel loved, and to avoid pain and suffering.

THE WAY FORWARD

I have these 8 verses on my bedroom walls [in BIG type] so that every night it is the last thing I see before I go to sleep, and every morning it is the first thing I see when I wake up. They have been there for geez… at least 12 years… and I am still learning from them every day. This is not something you understand and can apply overnight… this is about making a lifelong choice to treat EVERY person better, and to be a better person yourself:…

I will be posting more Journals explaining more about each of these principles.

HOLY POO ON A POPSICLE BATMAN - I SOLD ANOTHER SHIRT

Unfortuneatly I don’t know who the lovely person was who bought it… hopefully they will put it in the Buyer’s Booth.

This has been an amazing month for me sales-wise. I don’t sell a lot of stuff – its not really why I am here, and in 3 years I have only sold about 16 or 17 things.

I’m not exactly supporting RB’s finances, huh?

But in the last month I have sold 3 t-shirts and a sticker… which is the highest monthly sales I have ever had!

Not enough to retire on just yet! heh heh heh

As it is for most of us… sales of any product just makes me so stupidly happy.

As an artist [even one who makes cheap and silly “slogan” t-shirts] it is deeply validating that someone likes my work enough that they are prepared to spend their own hard-earned money to buy it, and even cooler that they would wea

Gusman is such a cute happy laughing little thing, always a joy and a lot of fun, hardly ever throws a tanty… but then he probably waits until everyone leaves and then drops his bundle in front of Mum.

Anyway, I love the expression on his face, its priceless… he always does funny shit like this.

Shortly after this shot, Gusman decided to ram his finger up my nose so fucking hard that I think he actually touched the front part of my brain.

My eyes watered, crossed, uncrossed and met each other around the back, and then my short term memory processing went all funny.

My sister laughed with mostest heartyness and said that you gotta watch-out, babies are surprisingly fast and very strong for their size.

I suspect I have more.

But I digress.

Adventures in Cooking: FETTUCCINI ALFREDO

OH…

MY

GOD!

No, really.

For those of you who don’t know… I have been staying with Dad for the last month while we repair my house after the big flood on 12th January.

It was my turn to cook tonight, but Dad and his GF are next door at the neighbours 60th Birthday Party, so I had to fend for myself.

I had been thinking about pasta all week, and had my eye on a nice little Fettuccini Alfredo Recipe that I thought could be worth a try.

Never had Fettuccini Alfredo before, and its always worth trying something new.

For those of you who haven’t been following this little cooking blog of mine, I recently bought a Napoli Brand Pasta Maker

I am now so good at making pasta that I wont buy it from the shops anymore. It is cheaper easier and faster to make it by hand.

And of course… it tastes sooo

PERFECT POACHED EGGS

Everyone has their own little way of making poached eggs.…

They all suck, and they are all way too hard.

This is the easy way, and the eggs will be perfect every time.

I love Poached Eggs. They are one of my favourite meals for breakfast. But I couldn’t cook them to save my life. So for ages I frequented a local cafe for Sunday Breakfast, simply because they did the most amazing Poached Eggs.

After many months of pleading, the Head Chef finally took me into his kitchen to show me how to cook Poached Eggs.

There are three things that you must get right for this to work:

  1. The eggs must be FRESH, and I mean F..R..E..S..H.. 1 or 2 days old only. Fresh eggs retain their “egg shape” when cooking. Older eggs will spread-out.
  2. The water must be only just bubbling, ever so slightly
  3. You must use vinega

SWEET PORK AND RICE

I am staying at Dad’s place at the moment while my place is being repaired following the big flood.…

Yeah, my house is ok, its almost completely cleaned and nearly ready for re-painting, and the new kitchen goes in next week… depending on when the power comes back on.

But I digress… [as I so often tend to do]

Those of you who have read my previous Adventures in Cooking will know that I spend a lot of time with my family, especially Dad, and that the two of us share a passion for food and in particular – cooking.

While I am here I try to cook every other night, but its a case of race-for-the-kitchen some nights because we both love to cook.

Tonight I cooked a meal that I am quite famous for: Sweet Pork and RIce…

I didn’t invent this one, I saw it on TV years ago, and it is far and away on

FLOOD UPDATE - CLEAN-UP DAY #3

On day 3 my workmates arrived……

  1. Michelle of the Overseeing,
  2. Steph of the Funny Saying,
  3. Juddo of the Muscles, and
  4. Peter of the Crust.

These guys are my Team from work.

Steph, Peter & Juddo started shovelling all the mud from the property. verilly like demons they worked, while Michelle and I started on the final washdown and disinfecting of all the walls.

We have most of the final clean completed now.

We found a Sparky in the street who did all our replacement electrical work there and then [I reckon you wont find a tradie NEXT week for love nor money] – so we were quite fortuneate there.

Then a NSW Fire Truck arrived, and Peter of the Crust who will now be known as Peter of the Hose, and Juddo spent 3 hours hosing all the crap off my yard.

The area is starting to look almost normal now. Most o

AUSTRALIAN FLOOD - UPDATE

Wellll, it has stopped raining, and the waters are starting to recede.…

The waters came up to the top floor of my house but no further. Everything downstairs is destroyed, upstairs is just wet and mouldy – but basically ok.

I am starting clean-up tomorrow with the help of friends and family. Its gonna take a while – the street is a complete mess – but once the power is back on I reckon it might be about a week or two and I can move back in.

Some photos of my street:

I want to take this opportunity to thank those of you who offered you kind words and support.

It was you guys and RedBubble that helped me get by minute-by-minute thru this nightmare.

I love you all.

Thank you everyone, and thankyou Martin/Pilgrim and crew for providing such an awesome place for us to come together.

Thank you.

AUSTRALIAN FLOOD DISASTER

Just want to let all my RB friends know that I had to evacuate my house today.…

I live on the Brisbane River,

In all likelyhood it will be submerged by this time tomorrow, if not – then the day after. I can not get back to my house to check – the suburb is now cut-off.

I got out just in time with my laptops, photo hard drives, some clothes and the cats.

Everything else will most likely be destroyed.

And to make matters even harder for me, tomorrow I have to go to work and save everyone else in the same predicament. [I work for Emergency Services]

I am now staying with my Dad, who lives in a very non-floodable area. The cats and I are all safe and we have plenty of food, water, and most importantly red wine.

Allthough my collection of 2004 D’arenberg Grenache will probably be lost to the fl

TEE SHIRT COLOUR CHART

Members often comment that the colours on their shirts look different on RedBubble than they do in the original design on their computers.…

There is a reason for this – and it is a very good reason.

RB alter your colours to more accurately reflect what they will look like when printed on a shirt.

“But why Byron, why can’t my customers have my colours on my shirt?” I hear you ask.

[Ok I don’t actually hear you ask that, or maybe I do, its hard to tell with all these voices in my head…]

Well, if RB displayed YOUR colours, then that is what your client would be expecting, … and its not what they are gonna get.

“But why don’t my customers get my colours on my shirts Byron?” [another voice in my head that insists it is you keeps asking…]

Well, think about it… a tee shirt is a low-res matt-finis

Watermelon? ... who knew it could taste THIS good?

ok, BIG family Christmas dinner last night.…

One of my sisters made something I have never had before. Its a Greek dish.

Apparently.

Its also very simple.

Slices of Watermelon, each with a mint leaf and a slice of Fetta cheese. OMFG it is truly amazing.

Bear in mind that I hate Watermelon.

I am using the word “hate” to describe a piece of fruit, and I am using the word deliberately. I know Australians are supposed to love watermelon, but I don’t.

I consider eating watermelon to be an experience slightly more enjoyable than drinking paint.

And I pigged-out on this stuff. I couldn’t get enough.

My sister and I tried Watermelon and Mint… meh, wouldn’t do it a 2nd time.

We tried Watermelon and Fetta Cheese… double meh,

We tried Mint and Fetta… meh plus a side order of blech.

But all three toge
