Artist's Description

Photos taken August 27, 2009 at the mouth of Gig Harbor bay, Washington. Image processed to simulate a ferrotype of the early 1800s. The earliest of these types of photographs were known as daguerreotype images that were a positive image imprinted on polished silver plates. Later versions were known as tintypes or melainotypes. In this process the positive image was developed onto blackened sheet iron. Why tintype was one of the common names is unknown and tin was never used in the process or as a backing material.
