Artist's Description

Black-tailed deer Odocoileus hemionus columbianus is related to the Mule deer and is the major deer species in Western Washington. I supprised this girl when I walked around a bend in the trail. The yawn is a sign of stress. She is expelling as much CO2 from her blood as possible preparing for a “fight or flight” resoponse. After capturing this image, with a minimal amount of movement on my part, she relaxed (deciding I wasn’t a threat) and continued her browsing.
Image captured at Paradise on Mount Rainier in Mount Rainier National Park, Washington State.
