Genesis - New beginnings

In the beginning, we were stuck in a kind of “hell on earth” not entirely of our own making. So we said: “Let enough be enough!”

1. On the first day, with steaming cups of tea
We settled down on the sofa to reclaim the tv
With cookies piled high, we let out a sigh
Of relief for the respite from the quarrels and fights

Complete control of the remote control
Just saying those words is good for the soul
Channels flashed by in the wink of an eye
We surfed for sure ‘til our thumbs went numb
No sports, no violence, in fact nothing at all
Which, in its title, included the word “ball”

With popcorn and candy, soda and juice
It was time for us to kick back and hang loose
Chick flicks and soaps, romance and “Lifetime”
Finally it was time to make the remote mine.

And we saw that it was good.
2. Next day we swept away the stress with the mess
Banished despair and hurt along with the dirt
Taking as long as we needed to do what we must
Clearing out insults along with the dust

Surfaces sparkled for all to see
As we washed the windows of opportunity
With vacuum cleaner, cloths and broom
We brought back life to each dead room

We let in the fresh air, we took out what’s old
We decided what to keep, without being told
No put-downs, no name calling, nobody being snide
We looked at our work with a great sense of pride

And we saw that it was good.

3. Next day took a trip from the slights and fights
From the anger and attacks which hold us back
From being the person we were meant to be
Someone special yet no-one could see

No compass, no directions, not even a list
Of places we longed to see, but missed
The opportunities to leave and be free
From such isolating captivity

Nothing in front but the wide open road
No luggage, no baggage to add to the load
No longer a reason to run and hide
Just start a new journey with love as our guide

And we saw that is was good.

4. Next day afternoon drinks at our favorite “Heavenly Brew”
Coffee and cookies, pots of tea for two
Sympathy, empathy cups of good cheer
Tales told and heard with a sisterly ear

Content to listen, eager to share
We each use that time to show how we care
Advice given and taken, our cups runneth over
Inspiration mixed in with the enticing aromas

Cups no longer half empty, our futures more clear
With hope and with faith, above all without fear
With love and support, on each other rely
With this new found freedom our spirits now fly

And we saw that it was good.

5. Next day we grabbed gym shoes and went for a walk
While stretching and flexing we warmed up for our talk
Cold bottles of water in packs on our side
Each steep hill and climb we just took in our stride

Runners raced past us but we didn’t care
As we giggled at cyclists and the tight shorts they wear
It feels good to laugh, does a body real good
As we take care of ourselves, as we know we should

Each time we’re out longer, we go home much stronger
We continue our fight to put our lives right
We know our progress means our troubles become less
Wiping sweat from our brow, our good time is now

And we saw that it was good.

6. Next day a girls’ mall outing is planned
We pile into the car with credit cards in hand
A day of beauty, a day of spending
If only this day could be never ending
Manicures, pedicures, highlights and trims
Use the “cure” in those words, let the healing begin
We relaxed as the salon fixed our hair and nails
Batteries recharged, now prepared for the sales

Feeling beautiful and refreshed, we head for the stores
Ready to shop “til we drop like never before
Retail therapy, what a wonderful phrase
Enjoyed by us all, in so many ways

And we saw that it was good

7. By the seventh day we looked back on those days
The only thing left was being in church to give praise
For being strong and determined to change how we live
Recognizing what others are willing to give

We rejoiced with great voice
Feeling proud sang out loud
Said prayers with emotion
Giving thanks for devotion

We seek no-one’s approval
Self love is allowed
No longer hiding in shame
We now stand out in the crowd

And we saw that it was all good
