This work is inspired by wonderful words of Vertigodog78…….. i highly encourage everyone to check him out

The Cost of Sugarless Sweets Author: vertigodog78

On this perfect day for sight-seeing, he’ll pack his belongings
Into a worn leather backpack, take the noisy keys off the ring.
To travel far, wide, long – right foot in front of the other;
Other in front of the right. Shouldn’t even have bothered
To stay that one more night. Having been restless
From the womb, having never craved a sugarless
Sweet, having always been a wandering xenolith;
Always stuck on top of these feet he is stuck with.
The Furies screech at him, “You didn’t pay, you can’t quite leave!”
Never occurred to them, he’d have something up his sleeve.
He is yearning to see ocean-tops and mountain-floors,
To feel the rush and pop of untying his heart’s anchor.

He craves more, always more – he is hardly satisfied.
He won’t stop until he’s seen the whole world, world-wide.
The Hours are upon him and summer swells the trees.
Smells of waylaid lovers raise curiosities.
To see the dust that’s settled in life-less deserts brimming
With sickly heat and fear, or he may be swiftly swimming
Through seas so dead or conspicuously red, you’d think
They’d be sweet and clear, or perhaps he’ll simply rest and sink
Into the wet earth underneath a rich, dense forest canopy.
The Hours are purring at him now, “Only we have the antibody
For the disease that will destroy you;” but he knows the hefty price
He’d pay for a useless cure and he can’t afford autumn’s chill advice.

He’ll beg for his childhood back as he nears the end of his life.
The Fates will hold his thread to his eyes and, with a rusty knife,
Threaten to cut short his thread that looks unusually used-up
Twice already, but not by him – oh, no! For he’s been like syrup:
Slow, slow in his pace. The Fates all giggle, prepare to disappear.
As they exit they all whisper, “This world is full of profiteers,
And you will have to pay up soon; but not today, not like this.
Your thread will stay strong awhile, but you’ve treated yourself as a chassis.
For that, there is a high cost.” Thick fogs roll in, coming from both
The east and the west, easily parting the growing undergrowth.
The fog clears a dangerous path, but it would take him ‘round the world and back;
And anywhere out there, he hopes, he should discover just what he lacks.
