Wonderful Work

Drove all the way to Chippenham
Thought I’d have a ball
Returned those miles to Bristol Town
And didn’t mind at all.
I’ve been around the whole South-West
And seen such thrilling things
But it’s meetings and those e mails
That pluck my old heart strings.

A hundred messages of hope arrive
From others wanting more
Of things they think that I can give
And that they know for sure.
“I’m sorry but“, they often say
“I’m sure this won’t take long.”
“You must respond by Monday week”
“If you wish to still belong”.

Meetings held that can’t decide
And even if they did
It’s seldom that the thing is done
That’s a fact that’s often hid.
People turning up so late
Often with their oars
Others going on and on
Perpetual, crashing bores.

Do joys await each working day?
Am I restless to get there?
But no, I know that it is true
Other pleasures I would share.
So, enough, I take no more
Of all this corporate mess
I’d like to pack my bags and go
Then afterwards confess.

Sadly but my time’s not come
So off to work I go
Trying hard to whistle
Trying not to show.
Even though I lead with verve
With my teams I boldly go
It takes not inconsiderable nerve
To not always say no.
