The First Day Back

Radio 4 impinges and tries to alert
Darkness remains in all four corners
My reluctant legs swing gingerly towards the floor
And crablike I shuffle towards the bathroom

I climb downstairs with the effort of the ages
Let there be light and the kettle is revealed
I return to deliver a steaming mug of leaf water
And recreate the miracle of hot water from the taps

I am still the only one who is up
And I slip regretfully through the back door
Passing into the lightening gloom
Starting the day and the car.

Today Bath, tomorrow the world.
