Early Winter

The leaves are blown by quickening gusts
Turning suddenly from gold to brown
The yellow of their fellows
Shows the inevitable way

The cold and sapping rain
Soaks and drips it’s way from sky to earth
Draining hope from early winter
Birds and men hide and nothing sings

The continuous grey blanket above
Stifles dreams and covers all
Pressing down equally on life and death
It’s power is without care

Autumn’s wealth is distant
As the long night of winter takes us in
Our future is so cold and wet
Dawn seems so very far away

Early Winter
