Not Summer

Leaves fall as the water in mountain streams
The road winds as the wind carries the fragrance
The scent of season’s end
Of home fires burning
Of memories
Of being someone else
If only for an evening
Kicking though the leaves
On the way to another door
The wind and the scents
Grey days and wind chimes
Songs on the breeze
Songs of home
Songs of birds
Birds outside the window
Feeding with the squirrels
They know
The breeze tells them
For now, they’re fine
Give them a month
But for now
The wind brings a colored carpet
That matches the gourds on the stoop
Welcoming home

Not Summer
