Artist's Description

Dragonfly laying eggs on wood-PPMPM3792-2860 is based on a painting taken from life. This female dragonfly put aside her predatory instincts for an hour or so one balmy summer’s evening to seek out a suitable place for her offspring to begin their lives. Luckily for me the chosen spot was a carefully placed piece of rotting wood that jutted out over the nature pond (with no fish) in my own garden. I was able to get delightfully close, so intent was the dragonfly on picking the bast places to lay, apparently a single egg at a time. I could have easily reached out and touched it, indeed my hands were often only inches from it. Of course, I was most careful to let the creature remain in peace throughout although, with it’s amazing eyes, it must have been able to see me quite clearly. I am now looking to seeing it’s offspring hunting in my wildlife pond in the years to come.
