My mother used to keep an old fruit cake tin filled with buttons, all kinds of miscellaneous buttons. This was back when people actually sewed buttons back on. Some of the buttons were really old. There were leather buttons, jeweled buttons and brass buttons. I used to look through the tin full of mysterious buttons when I was a child. Now it occurs to me that my mother must have been cutting buttons off of discarded clothes all her life. People who lived through the Great Depression often valued strange things.
