The darkness

He lies in wait,
in the midnight hours, keen on having his way.

In the dark the lights twinkle, flash and flicker.
The city heaves and sighs as he moves.

He survives off our emotional refuse and thrives off our darkness.

He comes in the night when all our securities are snug in bed
and we’re left with our helplessness to keep us safe.

Driven by hunger and exhaustion.
Pulling at our hearts in desperation
seeking satisfaction that never comes.
