Artist's Description

I made this image of the Steinway grand piano belonging to Mrs Frances Underwood, spouse of His Excellency the Honourable Peter Underwood AC, Governor of Tasmania, which was on display near the entrance of Government House, Tasmania during the public open day in 2010.

Camera: Rolleicord Va medium format twin lens reflex (TLR)
Lens: Schneider Xenar 75 millimetre f/3.5
Film: ILFORD Pan F Plus (ISO 50) black and white roll film

A Minolta Auto Meter III hand held light meter was used to take readings within the room, I then estimated the dynamic range of the scene and set an exposure to give good shadow detail. A tripod and cable release was used with the shutter set to “Bulb” for this long exposure of thirty seconds, timed with my wristwatch. From memory the aperture was around f/8.

The Rolleicord TLRs have always tended to live in the shadows of Frank & Heidecke’s exalted Rolleiflex professional models. As a Rolleiflex owner myself, I can certainly vouch for the stellar quality of their lenses, however rest assured, the Rolleicords are no slouches in the image quality department either. The coated Schneider Xenar lens fitted to the later Rolleicord models such as the V; Va and Vb is a superb lens, capable of stunning sharpness. Although you cannot read it from the Red Bubble preview images, the name of the musical score on the sheet music is clearly visible in the original scan file from the 6×6 film frame— Beethoven’s Sonata No. 8—Pathetique. . .
