If you watched Great Expectations episode 1 on BBC1 27/12/2011 you will have seen the sequence where Pip meets Magwich on the North Kent Marshes. You may already know that most of the filming for this sequence was done at Wick Marsh, Tollesbury,Essex. However the church where Pip was tending the graves was Fairfield Church (St Thomas’s) on Romney Marsh, Kent. I know because last February I was there, taking pictures, including this one.
You will notice ,of course, that there are no graves there, so they were obviously added before shooting. The first bridge that Pip runs across is there and is shown in the picture that I added to Red Bubble at the time. The actual church referred to in the book of Great Expectations is St James at Cooling,Kent, another place I have visited, and a group of little graves there is known as “Pip’s Graves”. If you looked closely at the TV programme you will have noticed that the letter that arrived at The Forge, was addressed to “The Forge, Cooling,Kent” Cooling is not too far from Gad’s Hill Place at Higham, where Charles Dickens spent the last 11 years of his life.
