Artist's Description

The Colosseum as it is right now. They are reconstructing a floor to let you see rather than imagine what it was like when all the gladiators fought there. At this angle it is more elliptical in looks but it allows you to see the underground passages close up as well as the walls which still rise to 4 levels above ground. .It is the largest surviving structure from Roman antiquity and was begun in AD 72 by the Emperor Vespasian and inaugurated by his son in AD80 with a gala that saw the slaughter of 5000 animals and a 100 days of games after that. Finishing touches were added by Domitian in AD 81 – 96 and seated 55000 people. The walls are made of volcanic tufa & brick with marble blocks. Armed combat went on for about 500 years. Criminals, slaves and gladiatos fought to the death and as well as women & dwarfs fighting, mock sea battles took place when they filled the arena with water.
