Artist's Description

This is a deep underground limestone cave used by the Mayans during the period from approx 650BC to 600AD)- There were thousand of artefacts in it – only uncovered 4 years ago when the owner of the land found spaces round a rock and moved the rock away – We had to descend a ladder he’d made, through a narrow entrance and walk through each cavern , going downhill most of the way. Each area was all set out with the artefacts he had tried to piece together from that section. In the fourth cavern he discovered two bodies – one of a man lying flat on the ground with his arms crossed but he unfortunately touched him and a lot turned to dust. The body of a woman was in pieces about three feet away. He collected all the bones/ jaws ,complete with teeth etc. The two skulls you see are kind of square. Archaeologista have found out that the Mayans bound the heads of their children to produce this shape!! The Mayans also apparently broke their utensils when they left the cave but this one has 4 completely untouched huge jars in various sections of the cave,. there were also spear heads, jade, shells, pots, dishes jewellery, rolling shaped stones for grinding corn – an utterly unbelievable find.
