Artist's Description

Central section of the Bridge over the River Kwai – known as the Death Railway, Kanchanaburi, Thailand. More than 250 miles of track , much through dense jungle was finally completed in 1943. More than 16,000 prisoners of War and 100,000 impressed laborers from many Eastern countries died building the railway. Between 1942 and 1945 30,000 British, 18,000 Dutch, 13,000 Australians and 700 Americans were moved in from Indonesia, Singapore and |Hong Kong, as well as coolies. The labour force was divided, one in Burma and one in Thailand to work from opposite directions.
I took a train ride across the bridge -it crossed amazing wooden bridges as it snaked through the jungle.
