Artist's Description

One early morning in Newark, I went wondering amongst our town old streets. Down one little alley, I looked above the roof tops and saw the silhouetted spire of St. Mary Magdalene church shrouded in mist. It brought to mind all the old movies of London, draped in fog. St. Mary’s has one of the most imposing parish churches in this country and is reputed to be the 5th tallest parish church spire in England. The spire can be seen from mile away.
“The earliest evidence is of around 1180, in its crypt; there is a thirteenth-century west tower with fourteenth-century upper parts and spire, a thirteenth-century crossing, and fourteenth-century south aisle. There are two chantry chapels dating from about 1500.”
