16 November 2012 off the Rocks

…returning ‘home’ (after being born in the warmer Northern Pacific Ocean waters) on the southerly migration to the cooler waters of the Antarctic – and, for the first time ever – this Humpback Whale Calf weighing around 3 – 5 tonne was cruising down the eastcoast of Tasmania with it’s mother, where they came in very close to the village of Bicheno and thankfully one of the locals came in to work to tell me the whales were around and in close, spending 4 hrs crossing Waubs Bay from Diamond Island, probably after nursing the Calf north of Diamond Island in McLean Bay as they do, they came out of Waubs Bay and around Peggys Point, so, I got set up in a favourite little bay they like jumping around in, and soon enough they swum around the rocks and reefs, which they apparently love rubbing against, and mother and calf both breeched twice within 30 metres of the shore, rounded the northern point of Governor Island and proceeded to keep playing as they passed around the island, coming in close again at Alligator Rocks at the southern end of The Gulch……
