Artist's Description

I found this cute little guy jump up at the base of my feet on a walk through a state forest last spring.

These are interesting little mice. They have been known to jump 3-4 meters or 9-12 feet. Not bad for such a small creature. Another interesting trait is that their tail (Which is not pictured here) is longer than their body. Surprisingly, they belong to the family Dipodidae which contain the Old World Jerboas rather than Heteromyidae with the New World Kangaroo Rats. These are also true hibernators spending half the year underground only waking for brief periods every couple of weeks. They need to put on as much fat as possible during the early fall months for they do not cache or eat any food at all during this hibernation period. Their main food are tiny fungi of the genus Endogone. This is not visible from the naked eye and it would look like they are eating dirt. They also eat a variable diet of seeds, fruits, and insects. (Touch me not) seeds being one of their favorites.

This was taken in McDonough State Forest
in Chenango County NY.
