Artist's Description

Two albums of my grandfathers wartime photographs were given to me by my grandmother. The albums combine photo’s taken in the midst of the shelling of Tobruk, the diggers serving with him, day to day life of a soldier, ordinary tourist shots and perhaps most interesting of all a selection that were allegedly “salvaged” from an Axis soldier’s camera. Whether seized from a POW or found in the field I don’t know and never will now.

Anyway I have always been a little worried about them being damaged or lost so I finally got around to scanning them and I have combined some of them here into a collage.

My memories of my grandfather are indistinct as he he died when I was young child and I largely remember a fairly avuncular doting grandfather. In the stories I have since been told he was a “colourful” character with a life story that fails to satisfy my curiosity due to the number of holes and contradictions that run through it. Curiosity is a dammed frustrating thing. I can speculate to the cows come home and never really know what the real story was.
