Releasing Angels

The city steams
and seethes
like the decomposing
garbage buried
under camelias, azaleas,
and birds of paradise
in its botanical
garden in the suburbs,
breaking out into
putrid hotspots
in unexpected places.

It growls all
through the night
like a wounded
cougar left to die
in the blood-red heart
of a twisted thicket
buried beyond
a deceptively accessible
mountain of
manzanita chaparral.

So many beautiful
children who drifted
into the city buoyed
on dreams of glory
sleep under crumbling
bridges on the concrete
margins of stunted streams.

Here, far away,
beyond the cholla
and joshua tree desert,
I have found the richness
of silence. Sometimes,
releasing winged illusions
leaves a lonely soul home.
