Artist's Description

I am so astounded by how many people want to use ancient languages but probably won’t even notice this little malaprop. “Molon Labe” (μολον λαβέ/ “come and take them”) was made famous by the 300 Spartans, but has been echoed by many in history.

So what is this then?

Those of us who took Ancient Greek at the University of Hawaii-Manoa have come across a translation exercise from the Odyssey, featuring this word, Mochlos (μοχλός), which was used to identify the wooden creation that the titular character used to blind Polyphemus, the Cyclops. Translations in the vocabulary section varied but we got stuck on “crowbar” as the definition we enjoyed the most. Forever after, we would refer to this word as “the Crowbar” which drove our teacher a little crazy.

“Odysseus didn’t go out to his car to get a tool to blind the cyclops,” he would say, but alas, his words fell on entirely too-nerdy and defiant ears, and to this day, I still joke about this with those other geeky Greeks.
