This beautiful spiritual has always moved me since my schooldays. Nobody sings it better than Paul Robeson, but I also include a link for a fine rendition by a baritone with a nice piano accompaniment and also a jazzy version by organist, Richard Elliott, which is my favourite of the three.

The background to the picture (also available unframed) is a tree in bud that I can see from our garden in the North-East of England with an unusual white cloud overhead (the rest of the sky was clear round about it).

The buds on the tree symbolize hope and the white cloud against the unusually dark sky symbolizes both a desire for deliverance and the means to accompany it. The dark sky symbolizes the hard lives that the slaves had to endure.

Originally the deliverance was from the cares and sorrows of this mortal life to a happier place, where sorrow and strife can never come.

Slavery was a major issue at that time, but, God be praised, that evil has been removed and the Land of the Free is now the Land of the Free for all of its inhabitants, not just for white people.

Whether you agree with his policies or not, the rise of Barak Obama to become President of the United States, is proof that God has power to deliver and to exalt and abase whomsoever He pleases, but it must never be forgotten, that He who has the power to give, also has the power to take away.!

The picture is presented here unframed but is available in a drop shadow frame elsewhere in my portfolio.
