My assistant, DJ, spotted this wooly bear caterpillar, which had left the sand dunes and was fifty feet or so away from the grasses and heading for the sea. I don’t know where it thought it was going or what had induced it to leave its natural habitat. DJ scooped it up in a handful of sand and returned it to its rightful place. As we walked along the beach we noticed that a large number of them had also left the dunes and some had succumbed to the heat and salt. A mystery as to why this should be! If anyone has an explanation, I would be interested to hear it. Its bristles can cause dermatitis, which is why DJ scooped it up in a handful of sand.Apparently it turns into a species of Tiger Moth.
