These three unusual cross-shaped gravestones date from the early 1900s.
They lay side by side in the Christ Church Anglican Cemetery at Bong Bong, NSW, Australia.
The central gravestone belongs to Etienne Livingstone de Mestre. Etienne was a well-known horse breeder and racehorse trainer. In 1861 and 1862, he won the first two Melbourne Cups with his horse ‘Archer’. Etienne won most of the other classic turf events in New South Wales and Victoria at least once.
On the right is the gravestone of his wife Clara Eliza (nee Rowe).
One of their sons, Roy de Maistre, became a famous Australian artist.
