Artist's Description

Sphinx – Cairo, Egypt

Featured in All That’s Archaeology, All Things Egyptian and Silhouettes

The Sphinx, with its monumental proportions, lion’s body, and human facial features, provides an unexpected naturalistic contrast to the geometric shapes of the pyramids.
The recumbent lion stretches 241 feet/73.5 meters in length and reaches 65 feet/20 meters in height.

World Heritage Sites in Egypt

An accumulating body of evidence, both archaeological and geological, indicates that the Sphinx is far older than the 4th Dynasty, and was only restored by Chephren during his reign.

In the background is one of the last surviving members of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Great Pyramid of Giza.
