Spring Has Sprung (for one half of the world, anyway)

Spring has well and truly sprung, at least that’s what I’ve heard.

I’ve seen it, too, in fresh green grass, and awkward baby birds.

With short-tailed hops, they flutter down, and stumble on the ground-
then up they go, with wings “flat out” and parents buzzing ’round.

The magpie youngsters, their raucous voice, demanding to be heard-the Willy wagtail’s brood of three-thoughts for mother bird!

A baby willy spoke to me, of all that it had seen- of termite queens, and little moths, of keeping feathers clean.

It’s “eyebrows” are the hardest part, to keep all white and neat-its beak can brush the wings and such, but eyebrows need its feet!!

When the Willys left their nest, they did it carefully –“One at a time”, their mother said, “ I can’t possibly watch three! “

For days before, they looked about, and stretched, and wobbled tails-they said they weren’t a bit afraid of finally “setting sail”.

I watched them from their eggs, these three, and now that they fly free some bits & pieces of their world, they choose to share with me.
