Cover of the ROLLING STONE!

Well OK, not exactly on the cover… 42 pages behind the cover to be exact.
And it’s actually the French version of Rolling Stone Magazine, which doesn’t exactly pack the same karma as the US or English version.
And in fact, I’m not exactly featured as an artist, and the picture’s not got groupie vixen hanging off my arm or licking my cheeks or nuthin…
But it’s definitely ME, your BillyBoy, on page 42!

So here’s the story. At the recording studio where I work (some would not actually call it ‘work’), we use, among others, Focal monitors. It’s a French speaker manufacturer that recently brought out a new line, and as we’re one of the larger studios who decided to use them, they asked us if they could take some pictures to promote the line. And being the good guys we are, of course we obliged…

They brought in their team of engineers, stylists and shooters and set up their equipment in our Studio D, which they felt had the right vibe. After noodling around with this and that angle, layout and props, they felt the shots were missing something…

In one moment of inspiration, they looked at my spikey hair, the way I was dressed, and the dazed rock & roll madness in my eyes… and asked me if I wouldn’t mind posing with a couple of beers, as recording artists do… I had to think about it, for about 2 nanoseconds, and said I’d be happy to oblige. They asked me to do stuff like take a few swigs (hey, the bottles were open and half full and from last night’s session and there was a fly sitting on the rim and there were 2 ciggy butts inside, and it was only 10 AM… jeeze!), so we agreed that I could just hold the bottle like I was enjoying it in a slow, savoring sort of way. They also stuck an ashtray on the floor next to me as all French musicians smoke and without the ashtray, they probably wouldn’t sell a single pair!

So we did about 5 takes with a couple of instruments from our studio backline scattered round and they showed me the results on their laptop screen and I thought they looked kind of cool. That was about 10 months ago. And since the shoot, I’d been loitering around local paper shops, looking suspicious like I was really after the stuff on the top shelf in the plastic wrap, and paging through every French music mag I could lay my hands on hoping to see the Focal ad… I gave up after the first couple of months thinking they weren’t happy with the campaign and decided to drop the idea.

Then, last week, John, the studio owner slaps this mag down on my desk… “Hey dude, after 30 years ya finally made the fckin’ Rolling Stone!”

OK, so what? I’m in the mag, yeah? Now just give me another 30 years to hit the cover!!!
