Tribute to the Fallen Soldier

As I sat on the park bench reminiscing
I remembered your touch oh so gentle
The smell of your aftershave oh so pleasant
The way you smiled that crooked smile
The twinkle in your eyes
The laughter in your voice

The darkness overtakes me
As I remember
The line of people shaking my hand
The way they carried your coffin that day
The rain drops covered my tears
The walk to the limo seemed endless

A little hand clutching mine
He looked so grown up
Face filled with pain
As we paid homage
To the man they called hero
He called Daddy

I walk home
Put on your old tee shirt
Climb into our bed
I lay there staring at your picture
Weeping in my pillow
As the baby, you will never see moves in my belly

The war goes on
The soldier’s families forgotten
Left in the shadows
How many more must die
How many families must we shatter
How many heroes must we bury
