Artist's Description

This is the skeleton of a wrecked heavy transport truck, one of the many casualties in the ceaseless convoy of Tata-manufactured lorries covering incredible distances on terrible roads to transport fuel and supplies to the huge Indian Army presence in Kashmir, Jammu and Ladakh.

Every week a few of these incredibly primitive trucks meet their doom on the narrow, unsealed and precipitous highway between Manali and Leh. Since the driver’s cabin has flat bench seats, a solid iron interior and no seatbelts, it usually means death for the sleep-deprived driver and whoever else has hitched a lift with him.

This particular truck was dragged from the crash site to be cannibalised for parts on a dry river bed next to a Border Police checkpoint at Upshi, which is literally a boom gate, two canvas army tents, four chickens, a motorbike and two very cold, hungry, lonely policemen. The day after this photo was taken, the only change was one less chicken.
