The cloud of smoke from the Kelmscott fires obscured most of the sky at home about 3km from the fire. The thumping of helicopter water bombers and poping of gum trees exploding was constantly heard that day and the next. Ash fell from the sky all day and everything smelled burnt for the next week. 72 houses and thousands of acres of forrest burnt out, though no one was injured.
