Artist's Description

The Church On The Blood in St Petersburg. Completed in 1907, on the site of the Assassination of Tsar Alexander II in 1881.

Every Sunday the Tsar travelled by carriage to review the Life Guards using the same route every week. On the 13 March 1881 a bomb was thrown under his carriage, it exploded killing one of his Cossack guards but very little damage was done to the carriage.
The Tsar emerged unhurt and was being urged to leave the area when a second bomb was thrown at his feet exploding immediately causing fatal injuries,the Tsar died hours later from blood loss.
