Artist's Description

A religious settlement since the Northumberland king Oswiu founded a monastry here in 657, the first Abbess was Hild later Saint Hilda. The present abbey was founded in 1078 and stood until it was destroyed by Henry VIII in 1540 during the dissolution of the monastries. The abbey buildings fell into ruins, but remained a prominent landmark for sailors and helped inspire Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
St Hilda is the patron saint of many university colleges around the world including St Hilda’s Oxford, Melbourne and Toronto. Schools also named in her honour can be found across the world from Washington DC to Singapore.
