Artist's Description

Palmer’s Penstemon (Penstemon palmeri) is a penstemon notable for its showy, rounded flowers. The plant is named after Edward Palmer.

This plant may reach 5 feet in maximum height. The flower is pink to blue-purple, and occasional specimens are red, yellow, or white.

It is found native to desert mountains from the eastern Mojave Desert to Utah and in New Mexico, therefore it is drought-tolerant and prefers drier soils. The plant grows in washes, roadsides, canyon floors, creosote scrub, and juniper woodlands, from 3600–7500 feet.

Photograph taken in a wash on Burr Trail, Escalante, Grand Staircase National Monument.
