Artist's Description

View looking northeast.

One of oldest churches in the Archdiocese of Chicago, St. James at the Sag Church and Cemetery sits on a hill overlooking the valley below in Lemont, Illinois.

Thought to be founded by Irish immigrants who worked on the nearby Illinois and Michigan Canal, many of the gravestones list the county and parish of origin — an Irish custom.

It is believed that this land was first occupied as a lookout site and later a French Fort, and that Father Jacques Marquette said mass here around 1673.

In 1853 the cornerstone of the present day St. James Church was laid and dedicated. The church is constructed of limestone excavated from the nearby quarries.
