Bridget - A Dublin Lass

I arrived on the Sugar Cane in 1793 …
Just 18 years old from Ireland … but I was not free.

Sent here to serve my time in a harsh and brutal land,
No escape from here as it abounded in harsh sea and sand.
So far away across the ocean, far far away from thee …
To never see my ma again or hold her close to me.

My pa he paid the ultimate price of trying to feed his lot
and was sentenced and hung in Dublin town and his body left to rot.
..and I was sent here to these shores
with a brother and more of the gang,
I made a new life and settled down with a kindly convict man
Who chose me for his wife from the female factory …
and we made a life together and were eventually set free.

Life was hard, crude and cruel,
we had nought and life was gruelling
Nine children I did bear – all currency lads and lassies
they laid the groundwork for a wonderful land
so all you, my descendants, could remain free.

Artist's Description

A tribute to my GGG Grandmother, Bridget Eslin, who arrived as a convict aboard the Sugarcane in 1793 from Dublin and married my GGG Grandfather, Robert Hobbs (Convict per “Active” 1791)

As bizzare as it may seem I was nicknamed Bridget while growing up, never knowing my ancestry until just recently. Since finding out about Bridget and her hard life I have felt a special bond with her. She is buried in the old Pitt Town Cemetery with her husband although Bridget is not mentioned on his headstone. Their land grant can still be seen as you approach Pitt Town near the Pitt Town Lagoon.
