Artist's Description

The old remnants of the wharf in the Morisset Hospital grounds sits as a monument to days of old. Being a psychiatric hospital since 1909, this wharf was originally built to assist in the shipment of the materials required to build the hospital and later for the transport of patients to and from the hospital. Initially people of unsound minds or ‘lunatics’ were not permitted to travel by road. The first patients were formally admitted to Morisset Hospital on the 9th May 1909 and consisted of 78 men who were transferred from Callan Park & Gladesville Hospitals.

Morisset Psychiatric Hospital is situated on the shores of Lake Macquarie which is the largest coastal saltwater lake in Australia and near the township of Morisset in New South Wales, Australia, and is about 90 minutes north of Sydney and an hour south of Newcastle.

The hospital grew steadily in size with the first female patients admitted in 1934. In 1963 the records reveal that the facility housed 1490 patients. A separate “stand alone” facility for the criminally insane (known as “The Crim”) was opened in the 1940s and closed in 1991. Unfortunately little of the crim wards remain today due to vandals who have been given free reign to steadily demolish these buildings – only the magnificent prison walls still stand.

The magnificent hospital grounds have been declared a wildlife sanctuary and are home to a large population of kangaroos.

Today the hospital population is greatly diminished and the grounds with their magnificent views of the lake and the friendly kangaroo population provide an excellent picnic spot for family. Enjoy a walk along the lake or watch a cricket game on the ovals there.
