A trip to the Blue Mountains in NSW Australia can be most rewarding for the avid photographer but be prepared to walk and explore the many walking tracks that the area has to offer. The Blue Mountains is an easy road or rail trip from Sydney and has been a favourite holiday destination for many since the 1870s with guest houses springing up everywhere to provide accommodation for the ‘gentile’ class of society. Some of the early establishments that catered for the elite and provided the best in refined dining and bedding was The Carrington in Katoomba and Hydro Majectic at Medlow Bath. There was a slight decline during war years before the area sprung back to life again to provide family holidays in the many guest houses throughout the region. Today little has changed although the new eco lodges and Bed & Breakfasts offer a more modern alternative to those seaking a more modern stay. Don’t expect to find a fast food chain though as the local council has worked with the local population to keep this element out of the area. Instead you will find the cafes of days gone by, hotels and restaurants that offer splendid choice of menus. Quaint shopping strips satisfy the tourists with an outlet for their cashed up pockets. If you like second hand books then Katoomba is the place for you.

The magestic landscape of the region can be found at the end of each road as most lead to one of the many lookouts that line the cliffs on either side of the Great Western Highway which is the main route over the mountains. For those who like to get closer to nature, you won’t be disappointed. The many tracks of the region will take you to waterfalls, cliff edges and overhangs and to the valley way, way down below. Just a word of warning though for those seeking more adventure, please read the warnings and equip yourself with water, food and warm clothing as many an avid day tripper has found themselves out for a few nights, lost, cold and alone, some have perished. A trip to the local tourist information centre will provide you with lists of the walks and their level of difficulty. For more information click *"HERE*":
