Artist's Description

Fort Denison has been known by the Aboriginal people as Mat-te-wan-ye, It was then known as Rock Island in the era of the First Fleet & Governor Philip. Later it became known as Pinchgut and then when the fort was built the island was named Fort Denison after Governor William Denison.

Ever since the arrival of the first fleet in 1788 and long before it became a fort in 1862, the island was used to as a prison, for punishment, and a place for the execution of criminals.

Today Fort Denison is a museum, it has a café and is open to the public via the various cruise operators, and is available for weddings or dinner parties.
