Artist's Description

The SS Minmi was a coal ship that was wrecked on Cape Banks, on the northern headland of Botany Bay on 8th May 1937 whilst travelling empty from Melbourne to Newcastle. The ship was built in Glasgow, Scotland in 1927 (statistics 75 metres long, and displaced 1,455 tons).

This image shows one of the bells that can now be found in the new Maritime Museum on Lee Wharf on the Newcastle Foreshore in Newcastle NSW Australia. Although a smallish museum, it is stocked with some wonderful exhibits and information on the history of maritime events off and in the Port of Newcastle. There are also two wonderful film presentations that run continuously daily. The museum has plans to extend the wharf at the front of the building to attract tall ships and ships of interest.
