Artist's Description

This image was chosen by Steve McLaren for his exhibition at the Tap Gallery in Darlinghurst, Sydney in 2010 and for this purpose I had it reproduced onto a large canvas. The canvas has now been sold to a local Newcastle doctor who has it on display in the surgery waiting room.

A digital version of this image was entered into the 16s Photographic Club February competition and was judged by Des Crawley who awarded an Honours Award plus Judge’s Choice.

His comments: a compelling study with the diagonal shafts of light a metaphor for enclosure/confinement/imprisonment. the level of information in the window is rich, colourful, vibrant and a most suitable focus for attention., the window divided into little cells is again symbolic of institution, in this case they have something of the aesthetic one associates with stained glass and thus a place of worship and this sensation offers a quite confronting presence to the window. at one level this is a delightful design usng a variety of trope – line, shape, pattern, colour, texture and figure ground. at another level the image invites speculation, reflection and alludes to a former function that is less appealing. the bold colour endorses the graphic design content, the degraded wall implies derelict and or neglect. At a visual level, emotional level and cerebral level this image offers the viewer much to celebrate. wonderful.

This photo was taken with a Nikon D90 during a 4WD trip to the now derelict and deserted high security prison for the mentally insane at Morisset NSW. I found this trip very sobering and distressing – not at how the prisoners were housed but the fact that this very important part of Australian criminal/medical history should have been allowed to be destroyed by those who do not give thought to preserving institutions of historical importance.
