Her curt voice threatened to cut me in two. Squirming I sit obediently. No escape, each club seat positioned with precision, facing Villette’s console. Dismissed; eyes return to her screen; tension engulfs me. Calming myself, I visualise a worm wriggling uncomfortably, translucent body balancing on plush upholstery. Shimmering rings circle her neck; head high, no discernable eyes, a tail of a face. My worm entertains me, I imagine her overwhelmed with the insignificance of her demeanour. I long for the Principal to immerge. Magnificent Villette shows no trace of humour. “You look tired .”
“I am, but I have to survive until Saturday.” Voice softening, Villette targets my worm with chatter. Her daughter is having an eighteenth party – she has many errands, an important cake – the details must all be attended to – and she is tired. There is also the stress of windows; she admits, at an evening party they won’t be noticed – but! She confesses, they are on her mind so they do matter…..

Relieved from the spotlight, my worm’s confidence rises. Ringing timelessly like a bell, her voice interjects. “….supernatural love.” She is talking of Villette’s overflowing, abundant love. Villette looks incredulous, embarrassed, her tasks and chatter forgotten. “You should be a public speaker”.
Taken aback, my worm is astonished. Only prayer will sustain her; humility threatens to tear courage from her string of a heart. “You are full of insuppressibly love, it has to go somewhere. Don’t waste it on the windows— God’s love is for everyone, and that’s what you have in you, plenty for all, just let it out.”
Villette relaxed visibly. “Thank you.”
Calmly, head resting; a disarray of body spilling over another chair; Christianity is mentioned. Now her lips purse. The look is unnerving, no doubt my worm is out of line; how arrogant and brainwashed can she be! What about Villette’s religious beliefs? Unperturbed; tinkling; the voice resumes. Villette’s breathing eases, lips recover colour. Flowing, measured words; not haranguing; but encouraging. “Keep giving. Don’t worry. Your love is enough.” Little did I know of the reassurance longed for. “…it was free, you received all this love free, too much for your daughter. It will keep coming, enjoy it. Don’t waste it on the windows. Don’t underestimate the volume of your God’s love, within you.
There, she’s mentioned him again! How dare she? But this time it was ‘Your God’.
Villette returned to her screen. My worm was turning opaque, rings were stiffening, restricting her neck, ‘God is here!’
I feel hairs on the back of my neck standing upright; a shiver runs down my spine. What had my prayer been today? ‘God, use me to reach out to those that don’t know you, I want others to feel your love.’ Low key and barely audible, God was intimately answering my prayer. ‘If only I could tell Villette’. Suppressing happy tears, my eyes meet the serene eyes of the Principal.
