Artist's Description

In 1978, I had the fortune to surf in Bali before it got really crowded. Ulu Watu in those days was one of the prime spots, and it was so easy to get tubed. The day I went out, there were only 4 other surfers out, and one of them was a friend. Before we got in the water, a surfer came out covered in blood. The reef is razor sharp and the tide was only half way up. Which was just as well, because when you get out of the water, you have to enter a cave and climb up a bamboo ladder with a little stream cascading over you.

But it was the tubes that made Bali so special. And I’m still lucky enough to be able to enjoy the waves now, but with slightly older equipment. Oh, the board’s new enough, but what’s on top isn’t, haha! And while I’d love to surf there again, I know that I probably won’t.

This is the first of a series of paintings I intend to make. This painting was based on a photo (but this one is a stock image). This is how I do a lot of my paintings, that is, Photoshop, then Painter and maybe back to Photoshop again.
