Like a shadow

like a shadow
he was
no substance, just a
vague outline of his
former self
a dark stain
was all that remained
his joy, his life
sucked away
like a winter scene
he stood there
all ice
so picturesque
for all his bitterness
a skeleton
a tree stripped bare
the leaves no longer
lined the ground
rotten and decaying
they had vanished with time
as if they had never even
existed
a somber face
gentle features
made harsh by
years of self inflicted
suffering
taking in the world
but appreciating nothing
understanding everything
with that same
pessimistic logic
so picturesque
but for all its bitterness
he walks away
leaving darkness in his wake
like a shadow
he was

Like a shadow
