How Are You?

We wake up, and it is a new day.

As the day moves us forward, we begin to remember illusions of dreams from lost yesterdays. We then allow slightly diminished possibilities to gradually deaden our joy; shadows of doubt swirling silently around our pure light hearts like dark vultures, whispering to us that we can no longer reach our God-given graces, wanting us to forget that, after all, no one ever needs to deserve grace.

“How are you?” someone will ask. “Fine,” we lie in response to the question, perhaps subconsciously hoping that they can’t see the dark silhouettes engulfing our pure light hearts.

As the day wears on, we imagine that our armor is compromised. We count our scars. Possibilities can seem now like distant or foolish dreams through our battle weary eyes. Our treacherous memories delude us into imagining that we can no longer reach what has already been gifted to us.

For tens of thousands of years, people believed that the earth was flat. Wise men confidently passed this belief on, calling it knowledge. But for all of their talk, they could not keep the earth from being round.

As the day ends, we sink into sleep, the promise of the morning now another distant memory. It is said that the human spine actually contracts a measurable amount under the weight of the earth’s gravitational pull.

And then, something miraculous happens. It has happened so may times before that we have allowed ourselves to overlook it’s importance, and to forget that it is miraculous;

We wake up, and it is a new day….
