Black Snake Blossom

A night of bad dreams
And curled spine
Tugged me to a corner table
For a Bloody Mary breakfast
Red and green like Christmas cheer
Of the black dog kind
That bites
Hard

And then I saw it

A hole in the corner of my elbow
Skin puckered and folded back
Like an origami crane, wings spread
Too beautiful for me
To ever know how to fold

I took one edge in my fingers, and pulled
Like a loose thread, loose tooth
And watched myself
Come completely
Undone

Out flew stories
In coils of pale skin
Fluttering to the ground

The morning I sat
At the top of the world
And watched the sun soar high
Over the Arctic snow
And turn me golder than
I ever thought I could be

The day he held me down
With beard against my neck and
Hand between my legs and
Whispered, into my open mouth
You’ll never be the same again

That New Year’s Eve
We ran through the lightning
With rain between my shoulders
Bats in front of the blue moon
As we sang Elvis
At the top of our lungs

I watched my stories gather
Around my pointed feet
Like rose petals thrown
In celebration

And I thought

This shedding of skin

Barely
Hurts
At
All
