My first ‘real’ experience with an SLR camera was a borrowed rig that belonged to the father of a friend. He patiently explained exposure, ISO, aperture, etc. and I’m happy to say I paid attention to absolutely none of it! 17 years old, with 20 rolls of film to burn on a two week camp – what did I care about boring old settings? Well, I can tell you, when those 20 rolls came back with very little to show, and a massive dent in my wallet, I vaguely realised that maybe I should have listened!

Since that time I have gone through more cameras than I’d care to count. I never considered picking one up as a professional, although many people urged me to do so – I always remembered the money:reward ratio from that first time with an SLR. It never occurred to me that maybe if I had of listened a bit more attentively, I could have had a completely different experience!

Fast forward 20 years through a career that began in retail, branched out into hospitality, then detoured into call centres and finally landed in IT. After around 5 years of absolute fun, I realised that my time in IT needed to come to a close, but I was unsure of which direction I should take. Not long after I came to that realisation, I had some major changes on the home front, and found myself out of the IT industry as I could no longer meet the demands of both the industry and my home life. Where to from here?

I had been given a Canon 450D as a gift a few years prior, and had not long upgraded to an 1100D. It had been put to use on a side project helping friends with online businesses – stock moves quicker with pretty pictures! I decided at that point that I would take the side path of photography, and make it my main path. I enrolled in a course to help me gain my AIPP certification, which I am still working toward currently, upgraded to my Nikon (yes, I switched teams, but I still shoot with the Canons in specific situations!), and here I am.
