Artist's Description

During the second world war, the Japanese Army begun constructing a raliway branching off the southern line at Nong Pladuk Station. The construction of the Bridge on the Kwai Yai River (named Mae Klong River until 1960)… Begun in October 1942.

With the hard labor of over 60,000 men, including many prisoners of war, it was completed by early February 1943.

Over 1600 men died during the construction, including many Australian POW. Their bodies now lie in the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery…

And this bridge stands tall & proud as a reminder to us all of the hardships they faced
