Artist's Description

I started this piece to honor my husband’s aunt, Hattie Lee Motley born May 16, 1876. She lived in an era when women were not given equal rights. After her mother died, her father acquired heavy debts and mortgaged their farm. Hattie had gone to work in a textile factory in Danville, Virginia and saved enough money to buy her home place which she later gave to her brother in exchange for being able to live there with his growing family. She remained unmarried, living a selfless life on that farm until she died of cancer on September 13, 1944.
